Children's Skin Surgery
Skin lumps, cysts, and lesions are a common concern in childhood and are often a source of anxiety for parents — particularly when they are enlarging, causing discomfort, or of uncertain nature. Dr Ben Wagstaff provides surgical assessment and management of a range of skin and soft tissue conditions in children.
Common Skin and Soft Tissue Conditions in Children
Many childhood skin conditions are entirely benign and may not require any treatment at all. When surgical management is recommended, the approach is tailored to the individual child and designed to achieve the best possible outcome with minimal impact on their normal routines.
Conditions commonly assessed and managed include:
Dermoid cysts — most often found around the eyebrows, nose, or scalp
Sebaceous cysts
Pilonidal disease
Lipomas (fatty lumps under the skin)
Lymph node enlargement requiring biopsy
Skin tags and accessory skin
Supernumerary (extra) digits or skin remnants
Infected or inflamed cysts requiring drainage
Superficial soft tissue masses of uncertain nature
Ingrown toenails causing recurrent problems
When Should a Skin Lump Be Assessed?
Most lumps in children are not serious, but it is always reasonable to have them assessed if they are growing, becoming painful or inflamed, feel hard or fixed, are causing your child distress, or have an uncertain or worrying appearance. Dr Wagstaff will assess the lesion carefully and advise on whether monitoring, non-surgical management, or surgical removal is most appropriate.
Minor Procedures
Many skin procedures in children can be performed as short day procedures under general anaesthetic. For older children and adolescents, some minor procedures may be performed under local anaesthetic, depending on the nature of the condition and the child's preferences.
Dr Wagstaff will discuss the most appropriate approach for your child, explain what to expect before and after the procedure, and address any questions you have.
Wound Care and Recovery
Recovery after skin surgery in children is typically straightforward. Dr Wagstaff will provide clear instructions for wound care and follow-up, and his team is available to answer any concerns that arise during the healing period.
